The Victoria / Waterloo Tunnel in Liverpool, is a 2.4km long rail tunnel which opened in 1849 to link Liverpool Docks with the Edge Hill interchange. In 1972, the tunnel was closed. Whilst Merseyrail had considered the tunnel as part of its city network, it closed in 1972 when it was rejected in favour of the Wapping Tunnel for connection to Central Station. The tunnel is now in the ownership of Network Rail, who maintain its structure.
The tunnels route runs directly under the site of the new Knowledge Quarter, a development aiming to bring together the city’s key partners to collaborate in a creative environment and narrow the economic gap with London.
Our clients, Curtins and Morgan Sindall are heavily involved with the developments of the Knowledge Quarter and to support the construction process, they requested our 3D Laser Scanning and Subsurface Laser Scanning services to support this project. Our surveyors were required to traverse the entirety of the 2.4km tunnel to establish primary control from which high resolution 3D laser scanning was undertaken of sections of the tunnel which were of interest to the above ground developments.
The accurate survey data produced will assist all parties when progressing designs, providing them with the precise position of the tunnel in relation to the developments above.
